Primary Care Mental Health and Education
primhe recently hosted a stall at the Primary Care Event at the NEC on 23rd & 24th May 2012. I was there on 24th May and there were a large number of health visitors, midwives and student midwives delegates on that day. We had lots of interesting discussions about mental health training and support, the overwhelming opinion being that they felt that they had insufficient training and very little support once qualified.
One midwife said that she wasn't equipped to deal with someone who had her drugs taken away because she was pregnant and was in the middle of a meltdown!
Another person told me that a new service had been set up within their PCT so that patients could be directly referred; this was quickly oversubscribed and it turned out that there were only 2 sessions available per month in a PCT of over 650,000 patients
Surely we can try to do something about this?
